SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― The debate over free speech and religion was heard in front of Rio Linda High School Monday.

Four corners of free speech were standing shoulder to shoulder. Some demonstrators were young, some were old.

Hundreds were demonstrating together, supporting shirts, and the students that wore them. Four students were suspended from Rio Linda High last week for wearing shirts with bible verses and anti-sodomy messages. They were considered a disruption on campus, even though fellow students are allowed to wear gay pride apparel

Some demonstrators couldn't believe the turnout.

"It's just kind of cool and encouraging to see this many people out here, it kind of lifts you up," said Sophomore Oleg Manzyuk.

Oleg Manzyuk came from San Juan High School.

At 7:30, the suspended students weren't stopped as they returned to campus wearing the same shirts. One man hopes the demonstration is enough to restore order.

"I hope free speech will always be here...it's what our country was founded on," he said.

Two demonstrators were arrested at Monday's protest.
