4 Local Students Suspended For T-Shirt Statements
by John Iander
(CBS13)
Four students were suspended today from Rio Linda High School because they defied the principal and wearing anti-gay messages on their t-shirts to school.
A couple of big issues including homosexuality and the bible were the topic of controversy. About a dozen students protested how Rio Linda allows gay students to express themselves but doesn't give heterosexuals the same right.
"Basically, rainbow colors, they were writing on their bodies 'gay pride'," said Christina Ivantuk, protesting student.
When protesting students wore these shirts today, they were told to remove them or go home. When they refused, at least four students were suspended for two days each
"There's a lot of homosexuals out here, and it is kind of disturbing, you know, and we are protesting about it," said Ilya Beknizrov, suspended student.
The principal said the students were suspended for disrupting school and defying authority. School and local police monitored the street protest but did not intervene. The students were protesting here, and later headed to the state capitol to learn more about democracy.
