One Month Later, "Li'l Smokey" Doing Well

Li'l Smokey Slideshow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE (CBS13) ― Exactly one month ago, a young bear cub was rescued from the smoldering aftermath of a California wildfire by a firefighter and named "Li'l Smokey."

The cub was found with life-threatening injuries to his paws on July 17th in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, weighing only eight pounds. Smokey's weight has more than doubled, to 18 pounds, and wildlife officials say his recovery is going well.

The cub's burned paws are healing, but his caretakers warn that it may be another six months before they'll know if he's healthy enough to be released back into the wild.
