RT Employee Killed In Sac. By Light Rail Train

SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) ― A 40-year-old RT employee was hit and killed Thursday afternoon at the Longview Dr. and Watt Ave. RT light rail station in Sacramento.

Authorities say Troy Steven Schafer of Rocklin was lubricating the tracks on Thursday at a light-rail stop north of downtown when he was struck.

The victim was hit around 1:15 p.m., according to the Sacramento City Fire Department.

Schafer was a track maintenance employee. His wife, Donna Schafer, described her husband as an incredible father. The couple have two boys, ages 10 and 11.

Investigators are reviewing the train's operating data and video recordings to try to determine why the eastbound train failed to stop.

The train operator was tested for drugs and alcohol.
