Johnson Faces Protests Over Prop. 8 Opposition
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Protesters demonstrated outside mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson's church during Sunday services, criticizing his opposition to Proposition 8, the ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriages.
The demonstrators took aim at Johnson outside of the Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Oak Park, waving signs that accused him of playing politics and going against his personal beliefs on gay marriage. Johnson publicly announced his opposition to Proposition 8 earlier this month.
"What we're asking Kevin to do is not be a coward, not give in to the pressure of the homosexual community and stand up for what is right," said Reverend Jesse Peterson.
Steve Maviglio, Johnson's campaign manager, quickly lashed out, responding to allegations of flip-flopping on the issue of same-sex marriage.
"They brought hate to our community," Maviglio said of the protesters. "I think it's probably one of the most disgusting things I've seen in politics in Sacramento."
When Johnson announced his opposition to Proposition 8, he stated that his views on marriage were "personal," and should not be written into the state's constitution.
California residents will vote on Proposition 8 this November.
