Watchdog Group Files Report On St. Hope Academy

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― Federal prosecutors are examining a volunteer program run by former NBA star Kevin Johnson, a candidate for Sacramento mayor.

Investigators from the Corporation for National and Community Service turned in their report to the U.S. Attorney's office in Sacramento.

An inspector general's spokesman says investigators would not have filed the report if they had found no evidence of wrongdoing in Johnson's nonprofit, St. HOPE.

Inspectors checked into whether the program misused federal money, required volunteers to attend church and mishandled allegations that Johnson inappropriately touched young women enrolled in the program.

Johnson denies wrongdoing. He says St. HOPE committed only administrative errors.
