CPS Admits Wrongdoing In Death Of 4-Year-Old Boy

Child Protective Services Opened Investigation Into Boy's Welfare A Month Before Death

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Child Protective Services said today they "could have — and should have — done more" to protect a four-year-old boy who was allegedly killed by his mother's boyfriend earlier this week.

The agency opened an investigation into the welfare of the victim, Jahmaurae Allen, on June 16, 2008 -- more than a month before his death Monday. But today, in a press release they admitted that the social worker assigned to the case did not follow established procedures. The social worker has been placed on leave pending a review of the circumstances.

The Sacramento Sheriff's department arrested Jonathan Lamar Perry, 26, yesterday afternoon at a relative's home in Antioch. He was scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. today, but did not attend due to "psychological conditions." He is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.

Perry is being held in the Sacramento County Jail without bail.

Allen's victim's mother is not being investigated.
