Mayor Johnson Reveals Winter Homeless Shelter Plan

More Local News
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Mayor Kevin Johnson says he has a plan to shelter our area's homeless this winter.

The plan involves opening 269 temporary beds and motel rooms for homeless men, women and children. He says the plan was developed by a task force he created last month after the county cut services for homeless by 84%.

The beds will be available throughout the city, county and region.

"The idea of having zero winter shelter capacity was completely unacceptable to me," Johnson said. "Given the desperate conditions of state, county and city budgets in California, our ability to create emergency winter housing is a triumph of hard work and cooperation," he added.

Mayor Johnson says the plan will be paid for by donations from the city, the county, and private donors.

Last year, the Sacramento County spent $700,000 on winter shelter for the homeless.
