Mom Who Lost Both Children In A Day Speaks Out

Exclusive: Extended Interview With Jodie Carrigan

CHESTER (CBS13/CW31) ― It's an unthinkable tragedy – her daughter murdered on prom night and her son killed in a car crash rushing home after hearing the news.  Marianne McClary has an exclusive interview with the local mother grieving the loss of her only children.

In one instance, Jodie Carrigan's life was shattered.  On Sunday morning it began when she stepped into her daughter's bedroom and entered a crime scene.

Marianne met up with Jodie on Thursday afternoon at the high school here daughter had attended.

It's quiet at Chester High School, the baseball team is warming up for a game. But it's what is front that Jodie Carrigan wants us to see.

"To think that my daughter is up her and Steven," an emotional Jodie explained as she pointed to a huge rock spray-painted with remembrances and messages to her daughter Jenny and boyfriend Steven who were killed on prom night, "It just doesn't make sense. Oh God, I'm going to miss them."

Jodie's son Billy graduated from the same school two years ago.

At a friend's house, Jodie sat on the couch recounting the story she can't believe she's telling.  It began when the grocery store where Jenny worked called the house.

"She just asked if I knew where Jenny was and I said 'what?'" said Jodie shaking so badly the metal cross around her neck banged loudly against the microphone clipped to her shirt.  "Don't you know she didn't come to work and I said 'no'. That's when I found them.  That's when I opened the door."

The kids had planned to stay home.  Jodie says the last time she saw them alive, they were watching TV.  Jodie went to bed and was at home when the murders took place, but has no idea what happened.

"I don't know (what happened).  I truly don't know. I never heard a thing.  The dogs never barked. The neighbors never heard a thing," said Jodie, "It is numbing right now. There are time when I do think about it and it's like how do you lose them both. And how do you deal with it?  I don't know how to deal with it but I'm still here.  And why am I still here and not my kids?

Jodie says she's overwhelmed by the support she's getting from friends she didn't even realize she had. She's gotten messages from people all over the country even around the world.

And even though it may be hard to imagine for some people, Jodie says she is going to move back into her house once it's ready. She says the memories of that morning and her children will be with her always in her head so it doesn't matter where she lives.

Steven Furtado's funeral is Saturday at Willows Memorial Hall, with burial at Willows Cemetery.

The funeral for Billy and Jennifer Carrigan is Tuesday at the Chester High School football field.
