For the first time, the mother of a three-year-old boy killed by a jetski is talking about the tragedy.
Amber Chapman doesn't go anywhere right now without pictures of little Dominique Lee; it's all she has to hold on to as she searches for answers.
"I'm scattered, I feel like my heart has been torn out of me," she said. "I feel like such a big piece of my life is missing, it's so silent."
Dominique was Amber's oldest son and the sole reason Amber got her life straight.
"He taught me that there was life," she said. "I didn't care about my life before him, you know."
Amber was at school Saturday when her sister took Dominique and his younger brother Elliott down to the Feather River in Yuba City. They were about to leave, and Dominique was standing at waters edge, cleaning the dirt off his shoes.
That's when John Blanchard and Allan Minkema allegedly raced up on a jetski and ran over the young boy. Blanchard, an insurance salesman, and Minkema, a crop duster worker, are friends.
Investigators say both were under the influence at the time of the crash.
"I know they didn't mean to, I just don't know why they were so careless, you know," Amber said.
Amber says she's not angry, because she knows the two men who live the rest of their lives knowing their alleged carelessness cost a little boy his life.
