Racy Filmmaker Bringing Dugard Story To Screen

More Local News
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Jaycee Dugard allegedly suffered at the hands of accused rapist and kidnapper Phillip Garrido for 18 years, but a California filmmaker plans on taking the disturbing details of her ordeal to the silver screen just a couple of months after her rescue.

Shane Ryan, an actor and filmmaker behind such movies as "Amateur Porn Star Killer" and "Sex, Kids, Party," wants to make a movie called "Abducted Girl: An American Sex Slave," based on the Dugard kidnapping.

Ryan freely admits that his movie titles are meant to be sensational and says he uses sex to capture people's attention, but he says he won't exploit Dugard in his proposed movie.

"We want to capture how sad this story is, but also how interesting," Ryan said in a phone interview with CBS13. "We're trying to figure out a way to do that so it's not exploitative."

Quotes from reviews of Ryan's past films are featured prominently on his website, with such descriptions as "effective exploitation," "a porno film for sociopaths," and "one disturbing movie" highlighted.

"We've learned in marketing that some of those quotes work for some people," Ryan said.

Child psychologist Dr. Debra Moore accused Ryan of exploiting Jaycee's story and said she "cringed" when she heard about the project.

"This is a woman who has been through so much," Dr. Moore said. "It's being framed as sexual; its being framed as titillating and it misses the entire point."

Local attorney Brian McGinity pointed out that there are legal issues surrounding the case in addition to any moral ones. Until the case comes to a conclusion, the movie could be seen as interfering with the judicial process.

"I would not want any interference. I would want the legal system to do its job," McGinity said.

"And it sounds more like to me a pornographic film," he said.

Ryan said he's hoping to release the movie this spring.

A call seeking comment from Jaycee Dugard's attorney was not immediately returned.
