State Lawmaker Wants To Tax iTunes And Others

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― A state lawmaker wants California to tax music and video downloads from iTunes and other online entertainment sites.

East Los Angeles Assemblyman Charles Calderon has asked the state Board of Equalization to redefine what's a tangible item taxable by the state.

He says anything that can be downloaded from the Internet could fit the bill. Calderon's critics say he's trying to circumvent the normal path to get a new tax approved.

Tax hikes require a two-thirds majority -- a threshold that requires Republican support.

However, redefining Internet downloads as taxable may only require support by the Legislature's Democratic majority.
