Loud Car Stereo Leads To Hit And Run In Modesto

MODESTO (CBS13) ― A 45-year-old man was arrested and booked yesterday evening for a felony hit and run incident in Modesto following a series of events involving a loud car stereo.

Authorities say that the incident began around 3:20 p.m., after witnesses called police reporting a hit and run had occurred involving a small gold vehicle.

The victim was reportedly rushed to the hospital with severe head injuries.

After a short investigation police were able to locate the suspect, William Gibbs, at his home.

According to witnesses, a truck was parked on Reseda Lane with its stereo on. Gibbs reportedly drove up in his car and spoke with the victim about the loud stereo. Witnesses reported a confrontation and then Gibbs drove away.

After a short time, Gibbs returned to where the truck was parked because the stereo was turned back on. The victim and Gibbs apparently began to argue once again.

Details about what occurred next are not clear, but at some point Gibbs began to drive forward in his vehicle and the victim ended up on the hood of the car. Gibbs continued to drive and either braked suddenly or turned his car and the victim fell off. Gibbs did not stop and fled the area.

Detectives are still working the case and could possibly arrest Gibbs on additional charges. Anyone with information about what occurred is urged to contact Modesto Police Detective Jim Munoz at (209) 572-9551 or Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
