A Yolo County exploded to 600 acres overnight after destroying one home and closing a major roadway. And firefighters fear erratic winds could push this blaze out of control.
The fire broke out near Rumsey at about 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon which happened to be the first day that the Cal Fire unit that responded to the scene was at full staff.
The fire quickly spread to hundreds of acres on a hill near the Cache Creek Casino, forcing fire fighters to rely on helicopters to take on the blaze. Heavy smoke forced the closure of Highway 16 a short time later.
Fire fighters are struggling to get a handle on the blaze which is burning in a rural area, but there are a few homes that could be in danger.
"Very steep, very rugged terrain. The winds are erratic in the canyon. The fuels are very dry and obviously it was 110 at times yesterday. The weather is against but were making some pretty good progress on it," said one fire fighter on the lines early Tuesday morning.
Fire fighters say they don't know when they'll have the fire fully contained. More than 300 personnel are battling the blaze. They say it is going to depend largely on the weather specifically the winds. Fire fighters are attempting to prevent the fire from jumping across Highway 16.
