The brother of a teenager shot down at a Natomas apartment complex last night allegedly led police on a high speed pursuit that was so dangerous police had to give up the chase.
Friends and family held a vigil for 19-year-old Perell Marquise Waters on Wednesday night after he was killed while getting into his car near the 1900 block of San Juan Road by three suspects in what authorities believe to be a gang-related shooting.
Investigators say the suspect was driving around the area wearing gang-related clothing, and officers feared that he could be preparing to retaliate for the murder. Police attempted to stop the car, which sparked a high speed chase that reached speeds up to 70 MPH in residential areas.
Police decided to stop the chase because it was becoming too dangerous, but received calls a short time later saying the suspect was in the Rio Linda area.
Authorities established a perimeter near 20th and U Streets, finding a female passenger in the car before locating the suspect at a creek nearby.
The suspect, who did not give his name, said he was just trying to get to his brother's memorial.
"All of this, cause I didn't have my ****ing license," he said while being led away in handcuffs. "My brother died, I was trying to get to his ****ing candlelight."
The shirtless suspect appeared to be bleeding when officers led him away. No other injuries were reported.
No suspects have been identified for Tuesday night's murder, and police are still looking for clues and witnesses.
