Neighbors of a 21-year-old man shot by police after he allegedly pointed a fake gun at them, say they are not surprised by the man's behavior and say that he has been in trouble with the law before.
The man, Damian Lackey, a.k.a. "Creep" and his grandmother were hit by bullets when officers fired at the man. Police came out to the home on Gadsten Way in Rancho Cordova after they received a 911 hang up call.
Lackey's neighbors were not surprised to hear he had a gun -- even if it was an air pistol.
"Stupid; I would say stupid," said Alicia Stewart, a neighbor. "He does like to carry around little guns. There for a while he was carrying around a gun that didn't work and it backfired on him one day."
Now, Lackey's fake gun has caused real trouble for him and his mother.
Officers say when they arrived at the home they found Lackey with what looked like a real handgun. He had apparently threatened both his 65-year-old grandmother and 44-year-old uncle who live at the home.
After refusing to drop the weapon, Lackey allegedly pointed the gun at the officers who fired at him, hitting him in the upper leg. A bullet also hit his grandmother in the lower leg, who was standing behind him in the doorway of the home. Officers later discovered the gun Lackey had was an air pistol that shoots either BB's or pellets.
"We kept telling him, 'you're gonna get yourself shot.' And lo and behold, he got him and his grandma shot," said Stewart. "To do that at your grandma's house and get your grandma shot
come on, have some respect for yourself and for the people who love you."
Both Lackey and his grandmother are expected to survive.
Officials say Lackey was previously convicted of stealing a car and was also convicted of receiving stolen goods. Now he faces the charge of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
