Advocates hope the messages will "spark a conversation" with people who don't approve of same-sex marriage.

Starting tomorrow, several new lost and found ads will be seen online and in local newspapers such as the
Sacramento Bee, but these ads are not asking for help finding typical items or valuables.
A half-dozen ads, placed by those in favor of gay marriage, will be seen in the classifieds with messages like:
Lost: my right to marry the person I love. Last seen November 4th, 2008. If seen, please return to law abiding, tax paying citizens. It is dearly missed.
Another one reads:
Lost: Right to marry the one I love. Tell Shelly and Ellen if you're not using yours.
Shelly Bailes and Ellen Pontac, both Davis residents, were the second same-sex couple in the state to marry when same-sex marriage was legalized in California early in 2008, before they saw those marriage rights taken away after Proposition 8 passed.
"What our goal to do is to secure marriage rights by really educating and reaching into the hearts and minds of people," Ellen said.
They and others have chosen to do that through the newspaper, hoping to reach an older audience who may not be in favor of their right to marry.
"If it would just spark a conversation with them, which is very possible. I mean, it's really kind of cute, all these little ads and a surprise and not something that you'd ever see," Ellen said.
"It's a non-violent way of showing people what's going on in our lives and keeping it in the newspaper, too," Shelly said.
Couples like them have no problem spending the $32 for a two-line ad for 10 days. They also have an ad in the
Davis Enterprise, and other ads are being placed in other papers throughout the state.
