Foreclosure Crisis Affecting New Victims: Pets

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― The foreclosure crisis is bad enough for people, but homeowners' pets are suffering as well. A growing number of pets are being left behind in the foreclosed houses they once lived in when their owners move out.

Local animal control officials say it is difficult to determine exactly how many animals are being left behind in foreclosed homes, but they say they receive many calls from neighbors -- and even police officers -- about neglected pets living on properties with boarded up homes.

One possible explanation is that people are too far in debt. They get out quick and plan on coming back for their pets, but never do. The property owners will be there to repossess the property, and they walk into the backyard and they see abandoned animals left behind.

It becomes even more serious when the pets have no food or water. Animal control officers advise homeowners to have a game plan if they are faced with foreclosure, because the last thing you want to do is get in trouble by leaving you pets behind -- it is a crime to do so.
