Students Get Food For Doing Homework
MODESTO (CBS13) ―
A unique program is helping some students put food on their family's table, in part, by doing homework.
About 500 kids at Eisenhut Elementary School in Modesto are part of the Food For Thought program that helps needy students in Stanislaus County.
The program is sponsored by Foster Farms. The students get a 15-pound bag of groceries twice a month if they meet certain requirements, including enrolling in after school tutorial programs.
"They're here four days a week at least; an hour and a half each day doing recreation and homework as the main two components," explained district coordinator Michelle Bell.
Foster Farms is feeding the families through Second Harvest Food Bank in Manteca.
The students and their families receive a fresh bag of groceries every two weeks. Studies show that chronically malnourished students don't do well in school.
