S.F.'s Famed Fisherman's Wharf To Get Facelift

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― San Francisco planners are recommending a facelift for Fisherman's Wharf.

The proposal would make the world-famous tourist hub known for its souvenir shops and seafood restaurants more pedestrian friendly and appealing to locals.

Preliminary drawings unveiled Wednesday show the city is considering removing parking spaces and a car traffic lane from the street that fronts the wharf, as well as adding bicycle lanes and wider sidewalks.

Project manager Neil Hrushowy says merchants asked the city for the makeover so they could compete for customers who are being drawn to nearby Pier 39, the Ferry Building and the area around AT&T Park.

A final draft of the $10 million proposal is not expected until early next year.
