Firefighter Hurt Battling Jackson Hwy. Blaze
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
At least 6400 acres have burned in a major brush fire that left a veteran fire captain seriously injured. The grass fire started near Jackson Highway and Bradshaw Road on Tuesday, but fire officials say crews could be on scene for days trying to make sure the blaze is extinguished.
The injured captain was protecting a mobile home from approaching flames with two members of his engine crew when the wind and flames suddenly shifted direction, said Jeff Lynch of the Sacramento Metro Fire Department. The two crew members were able to get inside the cab and and escaped injury, but the captain didn't make it in time.
The injured firefighter sustained second- and third-degree burns on his arms and hands, and was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center for treatment. Authorities believe he will make a full recovery.
Dozens of show horses were threatened when the fire approached an equestrian center. Animal Control and neighbors arrived with trailers to transport the animals to a safer location, but the fire was turned back before it reached the center.
Fire officials say they have stopped the fire's forward progress, but expect to remain on the scene to extinguish hot spots overnight and possibly for days longer.
