Farmworkers March To Honor Death Of Woman

LODI (AP) ― Several hundred farmworkers and their advocates set off on the first leg of a march to the state capitol to honor the death of a young, pregnant field hand who collapsed in a vineyard two weeks ago.

State authorities suspect 17-year-old Maria Isabel Vasquez Jimenez died because her employer did not give her proper access to shade and water as she pruned grape vines in 100-degree heat.

The United Farm Workers started marching after a Catholic mass at a Lodi church Sunday afternoon and planned to spend the night at another parish in Galt.

San Joaquin County authorities are considering whether to pursue criminal charges against the labor contractor, Merced Farm Labor, that hired Vasquez Jimenez.

The pilgrimage is expected to reach Sacramento Wednesday.
