Families Evaluating Diet Habits After Beef Recall

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― The video of inhumane treatment of animals at the Westland/Hallmark Meat Company makes people sick, but the question is: Could these animals be in the food supply?

Including your child's school lunch?

Tonight, families are talking about what to do.

"My understanding is that the food is safe and they're doing everything to correct the problem that existed now, so we really aren't too worried about it," said parent John Kraft.

Others say that until the recall goes away, the kids will be going to school with a bagged lunch.

"It's really too bad that there aren't more scrupulous people making sure that our food in our food supply is safe," said parent Davera Gabriel.

One answer to the ongoing beef problem may lie inside one freezer: Raising your own cattle. Betty Giles and seven other friends started doing it after reading books on where our food comes from.

One of them cared for the livestock in their backyard, before personally taking them to slaughterhouse, assuring the meat was safe.

"We don't really know where our food comes from," Betty said. "We don't know how the animals are herded into their stables and I hate that, I hate thinking that."

She's not alone. Ranchers like Kenny Watkins don't like thinking about it either. But despite the recall, he feels the meat industry is safe.

However, he worries about what this recent recall will do to his business.

"It's going to definitely be a setback, any negative press sets something back," Kenny said.
