Coach Accused Of Sending Teen Explicit Texts
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
A girls' basketball coach has been arrested after allegedly sending a teen sexually explicit text messages.
The incident happened while Coach Brett Hamlett was shopping at Sunrise Mall with his wife, one of his 13-year-old players and her mother several months ago, according to authorities. While the two women were trying on clothes, Hamlett allegedly starting texting the girl, coaching her on sexual acts.
The girl told police that "he was texting me instead of talking because he didn't want to say it out loud, and he knew that he shouldn't."
The girl waited a while to tell her mother, fearing her basketball team might be disbanded if Hamlett was caught.
The coach initially told police he didn't think the text messages were inappropriate, and said he was "doing it as an uncle."
"I mean, I want to defend him," said Brett Hamlett's wife, Tamika Hamlett. "Of course he made a mistake."
Tamika says she had to help her husband remember the text messages he allegedly sent because he told police pain medication he was taking for a back injury made him forget much of what happened.
One of the messages allegedly sent by Hamlett suggested the 13-year-old player start playing with herself, but he told authorities that only meant to be about "bettering herself at basketball."
Another player reportedly told authorities that Coach Hamlett had a nickname for her: "Double D." It had nothing to do with basketball.
The Amateur Athletic Union has not said whether they will be taking Coach Hamlett off the court.
Hamlett appears to have had a clean record before this incident.
