New Law Requires Background Checks For EMT's

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― Governor Schwarzenegger is signing legislation that requires California's 70,000 emergency medical technicians to undergo mandatory criminal background checks.

The bill also creates a new central registry for EMTs and paramedics.

Last year the governor vetoed a similar bill.

At that time he rejected last-minute changes that would have kept secret some details about rescuer misconduct.
