Hay Fire Under Control Near Sac Int'l Airport

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) ―

Firefighters now have a large hay fire north of Sacramento International Airport under control after launching a massive fight to keep it from spreading.

A huge pile of hay caught fire around 4:00 this morning off Elverta Road.

The fire was between Highway 99 and the Garden Highway.

Firefighters had to call in several water tender trucks to fight the fire because there is no water access in the area.

The airport was not impacted because winds were blowing the smoke away from the approach pattern into the airport.

Firefighters knew they would not be able to save any of the hay, so they concentrated on keeping the flames from surrounding grass fields.

Firefighters say they will be keeping a watch on the fire all day to make sure it does not flare up again.
