Elk Grove Parking Fines To Increase Dramatically

ELK GROVE (CBS13) ― The city of Elk Grove is hoping to offset its cash crunch by raising parking fines.

The City Council believes the fee increase will bring in an extra $100,000 a year for the city. The new fine hikes will include red and yellow zone violations, parking in front of fire hydrants and violating no-parking areas.

All fees are going up more than 15 percent. A fine for parking in a handicap zone, for example, is increasing from $345 to $400 in 2009.

"The reason it's important is to keep up with inflation," said Chief Bob Simmons of the Elk Grove Police Department.

The new fines are expected to take effect in July 2009, when the next fiscal year begins.
