It's 'Game Over' For Electronic Bingo In Calif.
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Electronic bingo machines are no more in California.
Bingo halls were forced to shut down the machines at midnight Sunday following a federal ruling.
Indian casinos complained the machines were slot machines and infringed on their exclusive rights.
But charities that benefit from electronic bingo say the machines are basically video games.
They say losing the machines will mean thousands of charities are at risk. Backers say the bingo games help keep everything from veterans programs to school bands to school bands afloat.
"Their parents are struggling. They are getting laid off and then to pull their sports programs," explained Parent Volunteer Judy Mason. "It just helps us cause it's very expensive sport so this really helps us out."
The bingo halls have to get rid of the machines within two weeks.
But charities say they'll fight the ban. They head to court in August.
