Man Accidentally Kills Brother While Duck Hunting
BUTTE CITY (AP) ―
Glenn County Sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of a 44-year-old Lincoln man who was shot by his brother as the two were duck hunting north of Sacramento.
Sam Whittaker died Saturday after he was hit in the back by a shotgun blast from his brother's gun. Frank Whittaker, 55, of Orangevale, said the weapon fired accidentally when he tripped and fell in knee-deep water at Howard Slough, a state-owned wetland.
The case could be sent to the district attorney's office for review if investigators find that negligence was a leading cause, but sheriff's Sgt. Todd James said that was unlikely.
He said Frank Whittaker was an emotional wreck who could not understand how the shooting happened.
