A Year After Panhandler Attack, Disabled Man Dies

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― A disabled man who was allegedly shot by a homeless woman who became angry that he didn't have any money has died from his injuries more than a year after the attack, according to the victim's family.

Frank Perez, a state worker who suffered from cerebral palsy and used a cane to get around, was shot in the stomach on a bus stop bench near the intersection of 6th Street and J Street in September 2008.

Audrey Jackson told CBS13 in a jailhouse interview that she shot Perez out of self defense because she felt threatened by him.

Perez tried to battle back from the wounds for more than a year, enduring surgery after surgery to try and repair the damage, according to his family, and doctors thought he was going to survive.

"I for one did think that he was going to be okay," said Luis Perez, Frank's nephew.

Last week, Perez died suddenly while getting ready for another surgery. His family says he suffered an aneurysm that was caused by the shooting.

His family feels that Frank saved someone else from taking a bullet and believe he would have done it again.

"Granted he did have cerebral palsy, but by his attitudes and action, you could tell he never quit," Luis said.

Audrey Jackson is currently incarcerated in a mental institution, and is now facing murder charges.
