A great-grandmother nearly died when she was gored by a pet deer that was charging a baby.
A buck named Billy used to freely roam the grounds of the B-Bar Ranch in Placer County, just northeast of Lincoln, and was always considered to be friendly to humans by staff.
"He'd eat right out of your hand," said ranch employee Greg Mueller.
Mueller said that Doris Bower was walking to the ranch mailbox on Monday with her great grandson and grandson's fiancée when the buck suddenly became aggressive. The deer charged the trio, but Doris refused to let the animal near the baby.
"Billy the deer just got all crazy," Greg said. "[He] comes over, going after the baby."
The great-grandmother stood between the deer and the child, protecting the baby with her body. The deer gored her with its antlers, stabbing her in the leg and severing a main artery.
A Fish and Game warden arrived quickly and shot the deer, killing it.
"I heard yelling and screaming so I started running out the door, and I already saw an ambulance was here," Greg said. "If she had been out here any longer she would've bled to death."
Emergency crews quickly worked to stabilize Doris and rush her to the Sutter Roseville hospital, where she underwent surgery for her wounds.
Coincidentally, Doris was actually scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday for a different problem: breast cancer.
Greg believes that the great-grandmother is tough enough to take on the medical problem even after her deer encounter.
"Yeah, she can kick my butt," he said.
Doris Bower is in fair condition after her surgery and is expected to fully recover.
The Department of Fish and Game said that deer attacks are rare, but are most common this time of the year, during the deer mating season.
