Local Company Selling Decoy Cop Cars As Deterrent

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― A local company is making a full-size decoy cop car, promising that it will scare off speeders and crooks.

The look-alike police car would be placed on the street to stop speeders.

"I would slow down, sure," said one motorist.

The car isn't a functioning car. It has no engine, doors, or even someone to man it. The company National Police Presence is marketing this tool to law enforcement departments everywhere. At $12,990, any department can purchase the vehicle, tow it anywhere they like, and hope it slows traffic down.

"We're seeing guarantees from traffic slowing from 65, 75 miles per hour to 45, just like that," said Dan Root, from NPP.

Most drivers we talked to told us the decoy would make them hit the brakes.

"I think that would be a pretty good idea," said one driver. "I know I slow down when I'm on the freeway and I see a [police] car there."

But others worried that the lack of a physical police presence could create other kinds of problems, and there wouldn't be any help nearby.

"That is completely deceiving," said another person. "You are thinking help is right there, and obviously it's not."

Neither the Sacramento Police Department nor the CHP had heard about the decoy car, so it won't be on the road around here anytime soon. Any legal problems with the decoy have not been determined.
