Corrections Officer Brutally Attacked At Rest Stop
CHESTER, Calif. (AP) ―
The Plumas County Sheriff's Department is investigating a stabbing attack on a uniformed corrections officer who was headed to work.
Sheriff's Sgt. Ken Nelson says the attack on the corrections officer from High Desert State Prison in Susanville is considered an attempted homicide on a peace officer.
The unidentified officer was driving to the prison around 5:30 a.m. Friday when he was stabbed at a rest stop along Highway 147 about 65 miles northwest of Chico. Police did not say whether he stopped voluntarily.
The state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is also investigating.
Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton called the attack a "vicious beating." She says the officer suffered knife wounds to his face and throat and several broken ribs.
