Clear Lake Fish Die-Off Creates Foul Stench

LAKEPORT (AP) ― Thousands of dead carp in Clear Lake have Lake County residents holding their noses.

Officials are testing the fish for disease to try to determine the cause of the die-off, which began about a week ago and has littered the lake's shores with carcasses.

Lake County Fish and Game warden Lynette Shimek says viral and bacterial infections sometimes attack carp. The diseases do not affect humans.

She says carp are not native to Clear Lake, so their loss was not a cause for worry.

Lake County officials say burying the dead carp is the best way of limiting the smell.

The county has dug trenches at several county parks where lakefront residents can take the fish for burial.
