Chowchilla School Bus Kidnapper Denied Parole

SAN LUIS OBISPO (AP) ― One of three men convicted of kidnapping a busload of Chowchilla school children in 1976 has been denied parole once again.

Frederick Woods was turned down Monday for the 12th time during a hearing at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo. Parole officials say he received a three-year denial, meaning he can't apply for parole again for another three years.

Woods and brothers James and Richard Schoenfeld commandeered a school bus on July 15, 1976, near Chowchilla in the San Joaquin Valley. While the kidnappers were trying to arrange for the ransom, bus driver Ed Ray and some of the older boys escaped and summoned help.

The three received life sentences after pleading guilty in 1977.
