Ceres May Lift Ban On Pigeons As Pets
CERES (CBS13) ―
The City of Ceres will likely lift a ban on keeping pigeons as pets, but some residents oppose the action, fearing an increase in noise and the mess the animals leave behind.
Throughout one Ceres neighborhood, pigeons can be seen on rooftops, window ledges and flying through the air. A trail of feathers leads to Tammy Redden's house, where the walls are covered in bird feces.
"My son will get here and he'll have to scrub the walls," she said. "My daughter's bedroom is right here, she can't sleep."
And the noise is the least of Redden's worries. "People walk outside and [the pigeons] will peck them in the head," she said.
Despite the complaints, the city has voted to allow people to keep the birds as pests, saying that regulations will help control the pigeon problem by allowing people to keep them under certain conditions.
The city is limiting 75 pigeons to a bird house, requiring feed to be stored in a way that vermin can't reach it, and to keep pigeons contained except in certain hours of the day.
That's not good enough for some residents.
"They're ruining the roofs and they're pecking the kids," Redden said.
