Urgent Dam Repairs Force Drainage Of Popular Lake

KIRKWOOD (CBS13) ― Fishermen are outraged that a popular lake is being drained because it means thousands of fish will die.

Caples Lake is near Kirkwood off Highway 88.

The El Dorado Irrigation District says the main gates to the dam are so deteriorated, they could get stuck at anytime-- either spilling water uncontrollably or letting none out at all.

150-cubic-feet of water is rushing out every second to meet the September deadline of just 15-feet.

The irrigation district says the drainage must be done or the repair itself could be unsafe for those fixing the dam.

They are creating a plan to replenish the fish population.
