'Big Fix' Becomes Big Headache For Drivers
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
The Big Fix is finally starting to become a big problem.
The final phase on the northbound lanes is producing some of the worst delays since the project began. Today's commute was the second day of major backups for drivers driving south into downtown on I-5, where traffic levels are up 40 percent. Caltrans says the increase in traffic is leading to about 25 minute delays for northbound drivers -- that's more than twice as long as delays in the first phase.
Caltrans blames the delays on commuters getting lazy.
"So what that tells us is people aren't trying alternate routes, they aren't trying transit anymore," said Mark Dinger, Caltrans. "Maybe [they] got a little complacent, they're paying the price this morning."
The worst traffic congestion is occurring between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. in part because not as many people are using public transit or car pools as they did earlier in the project.
