Strong Winds, Warm Weather Threaten CA. Crops

MARYSVILLE (AP) ― Central Valley farmers are bracing for strong winds and triple-digit temperatures the next few days.

Their crops already endured a January windstorm and a late April freeze that caused at least $58 million in losses.

Walnut groves are among the most vulnerable because the maturing nuts don't handle the heat well. Last month's freeze stripped trees of some leaves that would have helped provide shade.

Raj Kumar Sharma, who grows walnuts in Yuba and Sutter counties, says growers would normally apply a heat-reflecting "whitewash" to trees. But high winds make that difficult.
