Classical Music Being Used To Battle Crime
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS13) ―
Here's one way to crack down on crime, use classical music for punishment.
The attorney's office is saying enough is enough. They say a Sacramento store is a magnet for crime and they may have a simple solution. By turning the music up, they can keep criminals away and help keep the store open. Beethoven and beer? It's a creative classical creation.
The business is a market called "Prit Market and Liquor" and it is located in Oak Park. The owner, Jack Patel, has been in business for 20 years and intends to stay that way.
Though the market is not in the best neighborhood, police have responded to hundreds of calls here in the past few years. The attorney's office is forcing him to install better lighting, a sound system playing classical music, and to call the cops when people hang out too long.
We contacted the city attorney's office today to see if they would tell their side of the story. They say they're not trying to close the business, just clean up the area.
In talking to the owner and his son, they say it will probably take about two weeks to install the speakers and make it start playing.
