A fired employee of a bondage parlor was arrested after a man's charred body was found in the badly damaged building near Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said Wednesday.
David Edward Albert was arrested Tuesday and booked for investigation of murder and arson, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Don Slawson said. Bail was set at $1 million.
Coroners had not identified the burned body, but investigators believe it is that of the business's owner, John Cavine.
Albert was fired last week from his job as maintenance worker, Slawson said. Deputies spotted him lurking in the bushes opposite the studio as firefighters battled the blaze. He had been injured and told authorities he'd been hit by a car.
But "he had injuries inconsistent with the story of being struck by a vehicle," Slawson said.
The body was found in the reception of the 7,000-square-foot studio, which is in an industrial area in the incorporated Lennox district near the east end of the airport runway. The front part of the building was destroyed though other rooms remained intact.
The body of a large, burned dog was also found.
According to the studio's website, which has since been taken down, it catered to people interested in sexual fetishes involving bondage, discipline, dominance and submission.
Slawson said arson investigators were at the scene trying to determine the cause of the blaze. Firefighters found chains, whips, medieval stocks and rooms made to look like jail cells.
