DAVIS, Calif. (CBS13) ― The new season of the popular reality show "Big Brother" begins Thursday, and a local university graduate is one of the stars.

Russell Kairouz, 24, has a degree in communications, which may come in handy on a show about relationships and strategizing your way to the top.

Russell's wrestling coach remembers him as friendly, hardworking and aggressive.

"He's very emotional, very likable," Lennie Zaleski said. "He's got a good physique. I could see him losing patience. He's going to let you know what he thinks."

Kairouz will try to outlast his housemates, including a neuroscientist, a gamer and a Tae Kwon Do expert. They'll live together, constantly on camera and in fierce competition.

His coach says his competitive streak will serve him well.

"I remember him just sitting there looking me in the eye, like, 'Nobody's going to beat me!'" Zaleski said.

This year's house features "California Living" with an emphasis on being green, from the décor made of recycled materials to the compost bin.

But you can bet that Kairouz will be focuses on winning the competition.

"I don't think he's going to give in, to anyone," Zaleski said.

Kairouz worked in real estate in Walnut Creek. The grand prize for Big Brother is $500,000.
