Black Bear Mauls Hunter In Tahoe National Forest

More Local News
CAMPTONVILLE (AP) ― An 83-year-old hunter is recovering from severe arm and shoulder wounds after a black bear mauled him in the Tahoe National Forest.

State officials say Orval Sanders of Oroville was hunting with six other men and some dogs near Camptonville in Sierra County when they encountered three bears Monday.

Mark Lucero, spokesman for the Department of Fish and Game, says one of the bears attacked Sanders after being shot. Another member of the hunting party shot the animal in the head and killed it.

Officials say they plan to test the bear for rabies.

Sanders underwent surgery for a crushed left wrist at Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

Bear hunting season lasts from Sept. 26 to Nov. 1, or until the allotted number of bears are killed. Officials say Sanders' party was hunting legally.
