OLIVEHURST, Calif. (CBS13) ― Yuba County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man they say tried to kidnap a nine-year-old girl on Monday night and then drove by her home as officers were investigating the crime.

Deputies say an Olivehurst woman called Monday night to report the attempted kidnapping of her granddaughter.  Deputies say the girl was walking on Larson Street when a man in a white GMC pickup truck asked her for directions to a nearby park.  The girl pointed but refused to get in the truck and drive with him to the park.  That's when the suspect jumped out of the truck and tried to grab the girl.

As a deputy was talking with witnesses near the girl's home, two of them spotted the suspect's truck and told the deputy.  Deputies later stopped the truck and detained 54-year-old Charles Dean Sherling.  Deputies say Sherling later admitted to attempting to pick up the girl.  He was arrested and booked on charges of attempted kidnapping.
