Sacramento AT&T Call Center Moving, 187 Jobs Gone

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Sacramento is losing another large employer. The AT&T has announced it will shut down its local Call Center and move to Texas taking with it 187 jobs.  But the local workers are not giving up without a fight.

The AT&T Call Center on T Street and Stockton Boulevard will close its doors at the end of September.

AT&T is not blaming the economy for the move, but says people's communication needs are changing.

Whatever the reason, workers in Sacramento are doing everything they can to keep their jobs.

Dozens of the the workers marched outside the call center carrying signs and beating drums to the chant of 'Save Our Jobs'.

"This is where I started from my roots with many friends and family that grew up here," said AT&T Worker John Adams.

The center handles consumer calls from people who have problems with their service.

In a statement released today, AT&T says "we are seeing strong consumer demand and growth in wireless, video, and broadband, while we see a reduction in consumer demand for traditional landline voice business. All employees from this facility can follow their jobs to others locations."

Those locations include North Hollywood, Pasadena or Houston.

But many of the workers here do not want to relocate.

"We are trying to do everything we can to alert the public that this affects 187 jobs. We don't want to see us outsourced to Texas and southern California," said Adams.

Several meetings are planned before the final closing date.
