Parents Of Severely Injured Toddler Jailed

YUBA CITY (CBS13) ― It started as a call for help. Someone said a two-year-old girl fell out of her bed after a nap. But detectives say they discovered more to the story, and now the toddler's mother, 29-year-old Kimberly Kennedy and her boyfriend 28-year-old Michael Michelet are behind bars facing numerous felony child cruelty charges.

"At first I heard she had a broken wrist and now has possible head fractures," said a family friend who wanted to stay anonymous.

A family friend says the toddler's mother was attending college and Michelet often looked after her daughter -- but doesn't believe his friend caused the skull fractures.

"If you ask the baby, the baby would say 'I love my daddy,' she would be in his arm all the time, putting make up on her, playing with her," said the friend.

The pair had been dating for a year and lived together in a quiet Yuba City neighborhood for the past four months.
The couple's landlord was baffled after he learned his tenants are accused of badly beating the toddler.

"They looked nice, calm and quiet" said the couple's landlord.

"I think it was an accident -- something that wasn't caused by him," said the friend.

Authorities haven't released the child's name, so we don't know the status of the girl.

The couple is still locked up in the Sutter County Jail.
