A 14-year-old boy is back in Yolo County after his mother abandoned him in Nebraska under that state's safe-haven law.
The Nebraska Division of Children and Family Services says the teen from Davis will be placed in the custody of the Yolo County Department of Employment and Social Services saying it was in the child's best interest to return to California.
The teen's mother dropped the boy off at the Kimball County Hospital in Nebraska on November 21. She told CBS13 in an exclusive interview that it was a difficult decision, but feared for her family's safety.
The 52-year-old Davis mother, Lori, is the mother of three adopted children, one of whom she drove to a Nebraska hospital Friday and dropped off.
"I explained to him the law that I had heard about and I told him, 'You know, we have tried everything,'" Lori said. She told Kevin, her 14-year-old son, "if you walk into this hospital, they will find a home for you."
Lori says she struggled to raise Kevin ever since taking him in as a foster child at age four. Recently, he had gotten into drugs, smoking, alcohol and stealing.
