Thousands of people including fellow officers and family have turned out to pay their final respects to a Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy who was gunned down in the line of duty.
37-year-old Deputy Vu Nguyen was gunned down on December 19th as he chased a suspected gang member in south Sacramento
This morning, thousands of people have packed the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament for a funeral mass for Nguyen. After the mass, a funeral procession estimated to East Lawn Memorial Park will wind through the streets of downtown Sacramento.
Deputy Nguyen was a 7-year veteran of the force and had been working on the gang task force for three years. Nguyen was recently married.
The 16-year-old suspected gang member who allegedly shot and killed Deputy Nyugen will be tried as an adult.
Jimmy Siakasorn, is being charged as an adult due to special circumstances. Most notably, that he allegedly killed Deputy Nguyen and also that he allegedly did it to promote gang activity, according to a Sacramento D.A.'s Office press release.
Because the suspect is a minor, he is not eligible to receive the death penalty. If convicted, he faces the maximum sentence of life in prison.
