SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― It was a devastating crash that killed four people including a toddler. On Tuesday, Roberto Vellanoweth, the man police say was responsible for the crash, faced a judge.

Vellanoweth showed up thirty minutes early to court. CBS13 was the only crew there when the prominent Republican arrived.

Family members of the victims looked on and wept as the charges were read against him. He was charged with 4 counts of vehicular manslaughter and 2 felony DUI's. Police say Vellanoweth caused the accident by driving on the wrong side of the road with a blood alcohol level of 0.15.

Vellanoweth did not enter a plea. His lawyer asked for a continuation until May 31st. Outside the courtroom Vellanoweth continued his media silence, only offering the message, "The truth will come out".
