USDA Officials Pull Beef From School Menus

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Local schools are on alert.  Meat from a slaughterhouse in Southern California now under a federal investigation has been served in local schools.

The state is telling all schools districts that meat is off the menu.  It's all because of some very disturbing video; video of cows.  Parents are finding out the slaughter house where the undercover video was shot.  It's part of a company that supplies meat to school lunch programs.

This isn't just animal cruelty.  The disturbing video is launching a federal investigation.  You see workers tormenting sick and weak animals to get them to stand for slaughter.  Cows that can not stand can carry a number of diseases.  We want to error on the side of caution.  The USDA has now put a hold on all meat products from the Westland meat company, telling schools not to serve the meat.

The California department of education is taking it a step further and telling schools not to serve any products containing beef because it can be hard to determine where that meat came from.  No meat balls in spaghetti or patties or ground beef, until the facts are clear we want to just say beef.

You don't want them taking a chance eating some bad meat.

Whether any contaminated meat ever made it out to the public will be the focus of the investigation.  Until that is known kids are gong to be left to wonder, where's the beef?
